Changing Library Spaces

As resources go virtual, library spaces are changing.

The impact of online journals on the print journal collection in the DUT Libraries has meant that many print subscriptions have now been cancelled in favour of online access. The extent of this changeover became quite apparent during a recent collection management project at the Alan Pittendrigh Library on the Steve Biko campus. Members of staff in the Circulation Department busied themselves with lists of journals and with estimates of future space requirements. Their efforts resulted in the number of display shelves being reduced to fit the condensed print collection. More than two thirds of the shelves were dismantled and removed as they are no longer required for print journals.

The physical space which was freed up has been re-purposed as study space. Much needed group seating with 4 seats per table is now available for students and has already proved to be a popular spot in the library! Together with these seats, the Alan PIttendrigh Library now offers 582 study seats in the library and an additional 137 seats in the wi-fi zone, the e-zones and the research commons postgraduate area. However, even with over 700 seats available, the demand for seating still far exceeds what is available.

If your favourite journal is no longer on display, please check the e-journal portal on the library website for the online version or chat to your subject librarian .
