Library Events: International Open Access Week (19 October to 25 October 2015)

International Open Access Week is celebrated by institutions across the world. Now in its 8th year, the event has been the key driver for debate on Open Access, and this has spearheaded various projects and campaigns to increase open access to scholarly material. DUT has invested heavily in events to create awareness on open access among academics and students. These efforts have led to the institution being the first among the U0Ts in SA to sign the Berlin Declaration on Open Access, committing DUT to implement strategies that promote open access in the University. To give effect to this, a number of initiatives have already started that promise to give direction and support for OA participation.

This year’s theme for Open Access Week is “Open for collaboration”. The theme celebrates successful collaborations that have led to initiatives such as PLOS, and also explores how we can be part of the global movement to set a new default for scholarly communication. There is an opportunity for us to collaborate within DUT on similar projects such as OERs, and also with other stakeholders that are involved in open education and open data, to advance common goals quickly.

The OER workshop planned for the 16 October resonates with the theme as it focusses on how DUT can collaborate with others in the OER Africa Project to create OERs that can be used widely, and freely.
