Inter-Library Loans

What is an Inter-Library Loan? An Inter-Library Loan (ILL) is a loan arranged with another library in order to assist DUT Library users to obtain a required item that DUT Library does not have. Searches are made on OCLC Worldshare (a co-operative database) to check whether the item requested is available for loan from another library nationally or internationally and if so a loan is arranged with that library.

Who may use the ILL Service? All registered staff and students of the Durban University of Technology.

Where should I look before applying for an ILL? You should first look in the Library’s catalogue to see if the item you need is available in any of the DUT libraries. If it is not available, then you may apply for it through ILL.

What can be requested? Most print materials, including books, dissertations, theses and photocopies of journal articles. NOTE: Photocopied items are subject to copyright limitations

What information do I need for an ILL? Book Requests: Author; Title; Publisher; ISBN No; Edition; Date of Publication. Journal Requests : Journal title; Article title; Author of article; Year/Date; Vol; Issue/Part No; Page No.
How long does it take? Between 1 – 4 weeks; depending on the location and availability at specific libraries. Urgent requests can be faxed. Use of document delivery service (Ariel) Length of Loan Is determined by the supplying/lending library The lending library can recall the item at anytime. Renewals of books are made through the ILL office. All overdue books are fined. Photocopies are yours to keep.  Lost Items The user is responsible for all charges incurred in the loss of interlibrary loan materials according to the regulations of the lending library.

How much does it cost? NB. ILL charges are payable whether or not the user collects the item. Payment must be made on receipt of the item.

How do I go about making a request? ILL processes (from February 2011) The Library has centralized the ILL operations at the ML Sultan Campus. New workflows have been introduced to facilitate the request for materials via the ILL request system. See diagram below for a description of the various steps.
