International Literacy Day – 8 September 2015

The 8th of September 2015 is International Literacy Day. Since its proclamation in 1965 by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), the day has been celebrated worldwide in order to highlight the importance of literacy to individuals, communities and societies.

The theme of International Literacy Day 2015 is “Literacy and Sustainable Societies”.  Literacy skills are the prerequisite for acquiring the broader set of knowledge, skills, attitudes and values, required for creating sustainable societies. “Literacy is the road to human progress and means through which every man; woman and child can realize his or her full potential.” (Kofi Annan)
